Tips To Overcome Procrastination
Procrastination is essentially postponement. Oftentimes, we procrastinate because we simply don’t have the desire to complete the task at hand. Before you know it time flies by. One week can turn into a month, a month turns into six, and the task remains undone. If you find yourself continuously bathing in the tub of procrastination and it’s hindering you from reaching your full potential, here are some tips that may help you get out of it.
Be honest:
Okay, Queen…it’s time to tell yourself the truth! Have you ever heard the first step to acceptance is acknowledgment? If you don’t admit to having a habit of procrastinating and putting things off, how can you take the necessary steps for positive change?
Ask yourself this…what is the root cause of the delay?
Is the delay in completing this task because there are underlying issues that are being ignored? Is there something hindering your progress that you are apprehensive about? Do you feel overwhelmed and have too much on your plate as is? Is there something you are afraid of? Identify what is causing the delay and as mentioned in the previous tip, tell the truth about it. This is you we are talking about! If you can’t be real with yourself, then who else can you be real with?
Tackle the hardest things first:
Sometimes you just need to get it done. Not wanting to do it will not make it go away. The habit of continuing to put things off can make it harder in the long run. If you delay creating a presentation for a big meeting the day before it’s scheduled, you are adding so much unnecessary stress to yourself. Try putting the demanding tasks first, so the simpler tasks can easily get checked off your to-do list.
Identify The Distractions:
When you are attempting to get focused, what gets in your way? Are the kids running around the house asking for more cookies? Do the notifications on your phone keep chiming away? Identifying these distractions can help to come up with a plan that allows you to be consistent and tackle your tasks when you have more concentration. This could mean waking up earlier to have some quiet time that allows you to be more productive.
Even with these tips remember to show yourself grace. The road to becoming a procrastination-free queen will not be instant. Be consistent, intentional, and move in the direction of progress. Keep believing that you have the power within you to conquer procrastination. You’ve got this!
