Clearing the Clutter by Alicia Gunter

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much we talk about clearing our minds, but not enough about clearing our physical environments. We talk about releasing stress, letting go of things that no longer serve us, protecting our peace, and making room for God to move in our lives. But sometimes the clutter that needs our attention is the physical clutter we subconsciously ignore.

Earlier this year, God brought the word clutter to my attention, and at first, I thought He was talking about the clutter in my mind. The stress, the overthinking, the responsibilities… You know, the usual suspects. But eventually, I realized He was actually bringing my attention to the physical clutter in my home. And girl, I had to get honest. There was stuff I wasn’t using, stuff I had outgrown, and stuff I kept saying I would deal with “later.” But it wasn’t just the stuff; it was the mess too. Clothes lying around, things that didn’t have a home, counters that stayed covered, drawers that needed to be cleaned out, little piles of junk that somehow became permanent. And when I really thought about it, I realized how much of that mess was quietly creating more stress. That’s the thing about physical clutter. It can become mental clutter without us even realizing it.

When your surroundings are constantly reminding you that something needs to be done, your brain never really gets a break. You may not be consciously thinking about the mess all day, but somewhere in the back of your mind, you know it’s there. And when you’re already carrying the mental load of being a wife, mother, employee, business owner, or just a woman trying to keep her life together, that extra noise matters. Sometimes we think we need to clear our minds when what we really need to do is clear the space around us. And let me be clear, I am not talking about having a perfectly clean house all the time.

Listen, life happens, kids make messes, and laundry somehow multiplies overnight like it has somewhere important to be. I’m talking about the kind of clutter that has become so normal, you stopped noticing it because you see it every day. As women, we can get so busy taking care of everybody else that our own spaces become an afterthought. We keep saying we’ll get to it when we have time, but then another week passes. Meanwhile, our environment is adding stress that we don’t need and didn’t ask for.

Philippians 3:13 reminds us to focus on what is ahead instead of staying stuck looking behind us. Sometimes that means being willing to release things that belonged to an old season. Now sis, I’m not saying throw away your whole house. Some things are meaningful and worth keeping. But everything doesn’t deserve a permanent space in your life just because it’s been there for years. There is a difference between keeping things that matter and keeping things because you haven’t taken the time to decide if it’s worth keeping or not. So maybe take a look around this week and ask yourself, “What am I holding onto that I really don’t need anymore?” Look at your closet, in your drawers, and allll the little piles you’ve been avoiding. You don’t have to do everything in one day, but start somewhere.

Clearing clutter isn’t just about having a cleaner house. It’s about giving yourself a space where you can breathe, think, rest, and actually enjoy being home. Your mind deserves peace, and your physical environment can either help create that peace or compete with it. And maybe that’s the bigger lesson here. Sometimes making room for what God is doing next isn’t about adding something else to our lives.

Sometimes it’s about clearing out what has been taking up space all along.
