In today’s culture and society, the promotion of promiscuity among women is pervasive. An example can be found in the current popular female rap artists, where sexual content takes center stage as a selling point. The notion of leaving something to the imagination has been long gone, replaced by blatant explicitness packaged with a pretty bow on top as empowerment. Young women and even some very seasoned women, are now being influenced to believe that true freedom lies in embracing an overtly sexual persona, with promiscuity being glorified.
This creates an illusion of freedom while concealing the harsh reality of the emptiness it ultimately brings. It’s a false narrative that is being promoted, celebrated, and commercialized. This hyper-sexualization transcends beyond the world of rap music. It is a part of virtually every aspect of American culture. Unfortunatley, many of our young girls are embracing and heavily consuming this music.
They are following the latest entertainers, immersing themselves in the music. They are making social media posts dancing to the songs. They know the lyrics word for word. They try to mirror the appearance and style of their influences, no matter how raunchy it may be. This can cause them to engage in behavior that is detrimental and thrives on ignorance.
This whole notion that as women our power lies within our vagina is false. The idea that being more open sexually equates to being freer and reclaiming our power is a lie. It strips away the true essence of love. It replaces it with the pursuit of casual sex as some kind of badge of honor. This over-sexualized culture can be alluring, but it often neglects to inform of the harmful consequences it brings. The aftermath can include unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, broken homes, and unhealthy relationships. These situations leave many women with regrettable choices and deep regrets.
That’s why it’s crucial for us as women, especially women of faith, to remember the source of our strength. Our power does not stem from being over sexual and promiscuous. In fact, this behavior diminishes our strength. Although we may not realize it at the time, it gradually erodes our self-worth.
It can be compared to drinking something that will never quench your thirst. You will always be thirsty, keep wanting more, and then wonder why the thirst is never being satisfied. You can’t fill up on water from an empty fountain. You can’t fill your cup from a pitcher that has nothing in it. You keep turning it over trying to get something out, and it never happens. Our true strength and value as Christian women lie in our faith, integrity, and knowing God’s word. It does not and will never lie in consistently giving our bodies away or flaunting around as if we are nothing more than sex objects.
We must encourage and uplift each other, nurturing a strong sense of self-worth and identity grounded in our beliefs. When we see girls and women around us falling for these untruths, let us remind them about THE TRUTH. Our faith and example set a path for the next generation of women. We can guide them to embrace their true worth. We can also help them resist the distorted narratives that surround them. We can remind them that there will never be power, in promiscuity but there will always be power in Jesus. When we drink from his well of water, this will be sure to quench our thirst and leave us feeling refreshed. By staying true to our values, embracing modesty and self-respect, we can demonstrate true empowerment.
