Walk It Out With Intention
I have to keep it real and honest, working out isn’t exactly my favorite thing. I know it’s important, and I respect the discipline it takes, but I’ve never been the type to get excited about weights or running on a treadmill. What I do enjoy, though, is walking. And yes, walking is exercise. It burns calories, gets my body moving, and helps me feel like I’ve done something good for myself.
But here’s the thing: walking doesn’t feel like a chore. It feels like something I actually look forward to. Whether I’m at a quiet park, a nice outdoor shopping plaza, or walking the mall before it opens (many malls offer early walking hours!), I have found that getting some exercise can actually be enjoyable.
And when you look at the research around Black women’s health, it’s a clear reminder: movement isn’t optional, it is essential. Our bodies deserve care, our hearts deserve protection, and our wellness deserves priority.
- The CDC reports that 61% of Black women have hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease—the leading cause of death among Black women.
- According to Black Health Matters, walking just 21 minutes a day can lower the risk of heart disease by 30%. It also helps reduce joint pain, boost immune function, and even curb sugar cravings. For Black women who face higher rates of hypertension and obesity, walking is a powerful, low-cost way to protect both physical and mental health.
- The NIH found that women may gain even greater health benefits from regular exercise than men, including a 36% reduced risk of fatal cardiovascular events—even with less time spent exercising.
This isn’t just information, it’s a wake-up call. The science gives us the “why,” but walking gives us the space to live it out with intention. It’s not only about lowering health risk but it’s also about lifting our spirits, one step at a time. When I walk, I talk with God. I let my thoughts settle and move through whatever’s been weighing on me. It’s not just about fitness, it is also about clarity, peace, and showing up for myself in a way that feels honest and doable.
And let’s talk music. I discovered a gospel mix by DJ Mack Cummings that’s full of energy and encouragement. It’s uplifting, joyful, and makes you want to move while praising God. This playlist reminds me: you can take care of your body and praise God at the same time.
So if you’re not a gym person, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Grab your sneakers, pick your playlist, and walk it out. Whether it’s ten minutes or an hour, you’re moving, you’re growing, and you are honoring the body God gave you.
Let your steps be intentional. Let your music be motivating. And let your walk be a reminder that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to feel like a burden, it can feel like a blessing.
