Celebrating Juneteenth: Community and Good Vibes at the Juneteenth Grand Cookout

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day rooted in liberation, resilience, and the unshakeable spirit of our people. What started as a delayed announcement of dignity has grown into a national celebration of culture, community, and the ongoing work that lies ahead. If you missed it, make sure you check out the Juneteenth post from last Wednesday for more history and reflection.

On Saturday, I spent the afternoon at the Juneteenth Grand Cookout at the Raleigh, NC State Fairgrounds hosted by Throwdown Events and Entertainments, and the vibes were everything they needed to be. Plenty of food trucks lined up, those fresh fruit drinks and lemonades hitting just right in this Carolina heat, music flowing, kids running around, families laughing, and folks simply enjoying one another. It was community in motion, the kind that fills you up and reminds you why we gather. I love when we can just get together and have a good time.

Juneteenth is a celebration of us, our culture, our creativity, our joy, our togetherness. It’s the way we show up for one another, the way we honor our ancestors by living fully, and the way we keep building spaces where we can breathe, belong, and be seen. Community is the heartbeat of this holiday, and every time we gather, we carry the story forward.
