Under Construction: Embracing Personal Growth as a Work in Progress

There is so much pressure in today’s world, especially on women. And as Black women? Whew. Sometimes it can make you want to say, “Somebody hold my earrings,” because we could preach an entire sermon on the expectations, responsibilities, and battles we face. We’re expected to perform, achieve, nurture, lead, overcome every obstacle in our path, and somehow make it all look effortless.

But what if, instead of pressuring ourselves to be perfect, we gave ourselves permission to simply grow? What if we stopped treating growth like something we should have already completed and started embracing it as a lifelong journey.

Maybe we should all walk around wearing a sign that says, “Work in Progress: Please Proceed with grace and much needed patience.”

The truth is, self-discovery is not a destination where you arrive, unpack your bags, and suddenly have all the answers. Every season teaches us something new about ourselves, our faith, our purpose, and the people around us. Maybe right now you’re in a season of learning how to establish boundaries, how to trust God when the outcome isn’t clear, or learning how to stop seeking validation from people who were never assigned to your destiny in the first place. Learning seasons can be frustrating because they often feel slow, but every lesson is preparing you for where God is taking you.

Or perhaps you’re in a season of healing. Healing from disappointment, rejection, grief, heartbreak, betrayal, or even mistakes you wish you could take back. Sometimes healing looks like choosing peace over proving a point. Sometimes it looks like forgiving yourself and letting go of past regrets. Sometimes it looks like finally accepting that what happened to you doesn’t get to define who you are. Healing takes time, and there’s no prize for rushing the process.

Maybe you’re being stretched and God is pushing you beyond your comfort zone, calling you higher, challenging your thinking, and asking you to trust Him in ways you never have before. Stretching seasons can feel uncomfortable because growth often requires us to let go of old versions of ourselves. But discomfort is not always a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes it’s evidence that something is changing and a greater blessing is on the horizon.

This may be a season of rebuilding your confidence after a setback, your finances after a difficult season, or rebuilding your faith after disappointment. Rebuilding pieces of your life that didn’t go as planned. Let there be no shame in your game. Some of the strongest foundations are rebuilt after everything has fallen apart.

Because the reality is that there will always be an area of your life that needs work. There will always be something new to learn, somewhere new to grow, and another level of faith to reach. That doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human not a superhero. You don’t have to have everything figured out to be worthy. Sometimes it’s okay to look in the mirror and say, “I’m still growing, and that’s enough for today.”

Stop criticizing yourself for not having everything figured out. Some chapters are for learning, some are for healing, some are for stretching, and some are for flourishing. You are allowed to be proud of the woman you are today while still working toward the woman God is still working on. You are simply a work in progress, always under construction, trusting God to write your story better than you ever could.
